1. Methodology & Test Harness

The benchmark corpus comprises 500 uncompressed 24-bit RGB images (average resolution 3840 × 2560 pixels) sourced from standardized photographic test sets, including natural landscapes, portraits, high-frequency architectural textures, and graphic charts.

Each image was transcoded in an isolated Chromium Web Worker using standard HTML5 Canvas toBlob() and WebAssembly encoders. Image fidelity was evaluated using reference mathematical implementations of SSIM (Structural Similarity Index Measure) and PSNR against the uncompressed 24-bit source buffer.

3. Key Engineering Findings

The Q82–Q85 Perceptual Plateau

Between Q100 and Q85, file size drops by over 54%, while SSIM remains above 0.958. Below Q75, SSIM drops rapidly toward 0.90, where 8×8 discrete cosine transform block boundaries become visually obvious in smooth gradients and skin tones.

WebP Delivers -32% Size Savings at Equivalent Fidelity

WebP at Q85 scored a mean SSIM of 0.966 with an average size of 440 KB, outperforming JPEG at Q85 (650 KB, SSIM 0.958) while occupying nearly one-third less storage and network bandwidth.

AVIF In-Browser Latency Penalty

While AVIF achieved the smallest file footprint (290 KB), client-side encoding latency averaged 340 ms per image (nearly 10× slower than JPEG). For batch client-side conversions, WebP remains the superior pragmatic web standard.
