WebP's lossy engine is derived from the VP8 video codec keyframe architecture. Unlike JPEG, which operates on isolated 8×8 blocks, VP8 predicts pixel values within 16×16 macroblocks based on neighboring blocks that have already been decoded. Only the difference (residual) between the predicted macroblock and actual pixels is encoded, drastically reducing required bits.

WebP Lossless (VP8L) employs a sequence of reversible color transforms: subtract green, color indexation, spatial cross-color decorrelation, and color cache matching. These transformed components are packed using modified LZ77 and arithmetic entropy coding, achieving 26% smaller payloads than standard PNGs according to Google WebM documentation.
