AV1 Intra-Coding & High Dynamic Range (HDR)

AVIF encapsulates AV1 video codec intra-frames inside an ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF) container. Its intra-prediction engine offers 56 directional prediction modes, flexible recursive block partitioning from 128×128 down to 4×4, and advanced loop restoration filters (Constrained Directional Enhancement Filter and Wiener filtering) that eliminate block boundary artifacts far more aggressively than DCT or VP8.

AVIF natively supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) with 10-bit and 12-bit color depth and wide color gamuts (BT.2020 / DCI-P3). This allows radiant highlights, deep shadow gradation, and zero color banding in skies and dark gradients.

At lower bitrates, AVIF frequently achieves 20%–50% smaller file sizes than legacy JPEG at comparable perceptual fidelity, according to Alliance for Open Media benchmarks.

How does AVIF compare to WebP?

AVIF is generally 15%–25% smaller than WebP at comparable visual quality and supports 10/12-bit HDR color, which WebP lacks. However, AVIF takes longer to encode and decode on older devices without dedicated AV1 hardware acceleration.

Why can't I open my AVIF file on Windows?

Windows does not ship with AVIF support out-of-the-box on older versions. You either need to install the free 'AV1 Video Extension' from the Microsoft Store or use Bitmorfy's AVIF to JPG converter to transform it into a universally readable image.

Is AVIF royalty-free?
