HEIC is an implementation of the ISO High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) standard using H.265/HEVC video codec compression. It breaks high-resolution sensor frames into variable-size coding tree units (CTUs) up to 64×64 pixels, applying 35 directional intra-predictions and advanced sample adaptive offset (SAO) filtering.

Unlike standard single-image formats, HEIC is a true media container. A single `.heic` file can store image bursts, multi-exposure depth maps, auxiliary alpha masks, audio streams (enabling Apple Live Photos), and non-destructive image rotation/crop metadata without re-encoding pixel data.
