The Apple HEIC Dilemma: Storage Efficiency vs Universal Compatibility
In 2017, Apple made High Efficiency Image Coding (HEIC) the default camera format across all iOS devices. HEIC utilizes modern intra-frame prediction algorithms derived from the HEVC (H.265) video standard, allowing an iPhone camera to capture rich 12-megapixel and 48-megapixel imagery at roughly half the file size of an equivalent JPEG.
However, the non-Apple ecosystem has been slow to adopt the proprietary licensing terms associated with HEVC. Windows PCs, Android smartphones, legacy web browsers, WordPress media libraries, and online portals consistently display errors when users attempt to open or upload `.heic` files.
